Four Ways to Pray During Your Workout

by Claire Keeney

Integrating prayer into your daily life helps keep your focus on God. And when your focus is on Him, you’re stoppable. With confidence in God, you can do anything. After all Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me”.

If fitness is a facet of your day-to-day, why not integrate prayer into it? It’s a way to make God a comprehensive component of your life.

There are countless ways to incorporate prayer into your workouts. Here are four:

Listen to Worship Music

Whether your lifting weights, running, on the elliptical, or biking, you can always opt for music that honors God. Worship music is a prayerful alternative to traditional workout music. It helps you focus and reflect while working on your health.

Some of our favorite Christian groups and artists include Elevation Worship, Red Rocks Worship, Hillsong Worship, and Charity Gayle. Check out Spotify or Apple Music for more ideas.

Take a Tranquil Walk

Whether it’s a nature trail or a sandy beach, both provide the perfect way to see God’s great handiwork. Witnessing His creation firsthand while walking is a good reminder of His grace and presence.

While on a walk, silence can be a powerful way to reflect. Often life has so much noise that it’s hard not to become distracted. It’s easy to lose sight of God in day-to-day moments. Silence can help bring us back to Him and remember all that He does for us.

Meet a Friend for Cardio and Conversation

Relationships with others can strengthen our relationship with God. Bike, walk, or even run with a friend to talk about aspects of your faith. Perhaps you might both read and reflect on a specific bible verse prior to the workout and then discuss it during your workout. Through intentional conversation, you can help each other better know God.

Journal After a Jog

While you jog, reflect on God’s great work in your life, including all He’s done for your health and wellness. How can you continue to do His will with a strong mind and body? What might you be being called to do for your neighbor in need or for someone who is sick? How can you continue to push to become the best version of yourself - the full person God created you to be? Are there any healthy habits that you should be practicing that you are not currently practicing?

After reflecting on your jog, sit down and journal. A jog is not only a great way to improve your physical health, but it also helps to clear your mind. The endorphins released during physical exercise allow you to think more clearly. With a fresh mind, you can do some of your best writing and reflection.

Merging fitness and faith improves your focus on God in your life. Listening to worship songs, walking in nature, journaling after a jog, and talking to a friend about God while biking, walking, or running are all ways to do this.
